How To Work with Kundalini Yoga and Meditation – Grow Spiritual Guidance

Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini Meditation – the practice of Kundalini Yoga

This book about Kundalini Meditation and Kundalini Yoga fell into my lap via my book club – Kundalini Meditation – the path to personal transformation and bliss.

Update: – in 2024, her latest book is entitled Everyday Kundalini, Yoga, Meditation, Mantras and Breathing to Empower and Transform Your Life.

Written by Katherine McCusker – a Yoga teacher and Opera Singer

Kundalini means “the coil in the hair of the beloved“.

It refers to our coiled serpent-like energy which begins at the base of the spine and moves up through the chakras or energy centers.

Working with Kundalini energy can result in a feeling of bliss throughout the body, mind, and soul for the regular practitioner.

Kundalini Yoga is the practice of yogic postures, mantras, and meditations that help activate the kundalini energy.

This energy can rise up through the chakras with practice, resulting in energetic openings and progress on the spiritual journey.

The book looks and feels beautiful (as you can see from the cover).   It contains illustrations and descriptions of the exercises required to start a regular practice.

There are also online resources available on Kathryn’s website so that you can download some of the meditations.

Kathryn McCusker’s Spiritual Journey

Kathryn is an internationally acclaimed Opera Singer and was finding that her career was putting a strain on her body.

She found that the practice of Kundalini Meditation and Kundalini Yoga gave her even greater benefits and help with her craft than her regular yoga practice.

She was taught by a spiritual teacher and visionary called Yogi Bhajan who was originally a Punjabi Prince.

He brought his work to Canada and then the USA, has written over 100 books on the subject of yogic meditation and trained thousands of teachers.

I love Kathryn’s description of Yogi Bhajan’s intention for this body of work –

To create teachers not to gather disciples.

Kundalini can feel like bliss

My main experiences of kundalini bliss have been unexpected…and I didn’t always know what they were – until now.

The first time was during meditation with Kai Kermani, author of Autogenic Training: The Effective Holistic Way to Better Health – where I happened upon a class at a professional learning event and decided to join in.

The resulting feelings of grace and bliss caused me to hug and kiss my business partner and a few other people afterward!

I definitely felt that I was in a completely different space and set of awareness.  It took quite a few hours for the effect to wear off.

Kundalini can feel like tingles or movement

I’ve felt kundalini energy moving up my spine during yoga classes and sometimes during my training as an EMF Balancing Technique® practitioner.

It was especially noticeable during the training for Phases IX-XII.  Before the training started and I was sitting in my chair ready to begin.  For some strange reason, my body kept swaying from left to right.

In that particular class, when our teacher Peggy Phoenix-Dubro arrived, she explained that we may feel ‘swaying’ sensations during learning and teaching these phases of the work.

This was because we would be working intensively with the ‘core’ or spinal energies and energy centers.

At that point I realized I was feeling the potential energy of the class!

Kundalini yoga exercises specifically for women

I particularly like the fact that you can choose different kundalini yoga exercises from this book specifically for your needs.

One of my areas where energy can get stuck in is the sacral area, low back, and hips.

You can choose exercises to focus on increasing kundalini energy flow for specific body locations.

Kundalini Yoga and the Year of the Snake

Through another great website (Eileen Seiler, Transformation Energetics) I found a Cosmic Weather Report from an astrologer called Mark Borax – you can read the post by clicking here.

He discusses the concept of shedding everything but love in The Year of the Snake  – 2013!

We have passed the great Mayan marker of December 21st, 2014.  Mark interprets the meaning of 2013 as follows

The best way to decipher the meaning of a year is to combine its Oriental Animal with its numerology.  After the Oriental New Year occurs on the 10th of February, 2013 is a 6 Snake Year.  The 6 = Task and Obligation, leading to Right Livelihood.

The Snake has to do with shedding outmoded forms that have run their course.  Undergoing the radical transformation necessary to emerge from the old.

As you shed everything in the way of right livelihood, and awaken to the great love within, remember that no barrier can block the creative dream of your soul.

40 days of Kundalini Yoga and Meditation Practice

I take this as a sign that I’m on the right path by taking up this kind of meditation practice.

After working through Iyanla Vanzant’s  7 days of Writing 40 Affirmations per day – I feel that I have the resolve to do this.

It also matches with my observations about mass media and the modern age, I believe I will feel freer after doing this work – and I intend to keep on practicing!

As Mark Borax so aptly says in his post

As the repressed life force of the world — kundalini (coiled serpent power) — uncoils and releases, it will surge through the world body from your head to your spine.   Many others across the planet will shed their skin and awaken from the mass deception of the modern age.

Mark Borax

I’ll keep you up to date on my practice – let me know if you feel moved to join this practice too!

Update – my experience after 40 days

Update – read the related blog post here after my 40 days.

I think it’s time for many of us to shift our patterns and uncoil from systems that are no longer working for us.

Uncoiling into kundalini meditation…
