Resources for Empaths

Empaths seem to be awakening!  Many more people on their spiritual journey are realizing that part of the reasons for their spiritual experiences are that they are Highly Sensitive, or feel their own or the emotions of others extremely deeply.

Being on the empathic spectrum can also to feeling the energy of locations or imprinted energy within locations, receiving deep knowledge of circumstances – even feeling the emotions of Loved Ones who have passed on if you happen to be an empathic medium.

Definition of an empath

This post on my New World Energetics services site has received a lot of reads lately – in it I quote Dr Judith Orloff MD who defines empaths as

Empaths are highly sensitive, finely tuned instruments when it comes to emotions. They feel everything, sometimes to an extreme, and are less apt to intellectualize feelings.

Intuition is the filter through which they experience the world.  Empaths are naturally giving, spiritually attuned, and good listeners. If you want heart, empaths have got it. Through thick and thin, they’re there for you, world-class nurturers.

personal energyResource number 1 for empaths – becoming aware of your energy boundaries

It’s important to understand that as an empath, you are practicing certain behaviors with your personal energy field that others may not be practicing.

Think of empathy or being an empath as not only — but alsoNot only is empathy a personality trait, but it’s also an energetic behavior.

Consider the concept of your personal energy.  How far does it extend from your body?  Does it touch other people/places/things?  Where does it go when you think about a particular place or person repetitively?

If you can…

  • feel other’s feelings
  • notice unusual energy in a location
  • sense things about people/places that your logical mind couldn’t possibly know (and that you can validate)

…then the chances are you are throwing your energy field out there in some way.  If you are not consciously aware of this process then this behavior can lead you into difficulties because…

— you walk into a store and suddenly feel depressed

— emotional family events such as bereavement or even Christmas can be enormously draining for you

— strong emotions such as anger and frustration can feel extremely scary when they are a whole body experience.

The important thing to begin to learn here for an empath…

Keep that energy tucked in when you are out and about or in an emotionally draining situation!

I use this verbal reminder when I am out so that I don’t slip into feeling (and then trying to hold) everyone else’s energy.

Be among the people, not of the people.

If you are an empath, you will totally get this.

Resource number 2 – Who’s Stuff is this Anyway?

Learning about your boundaries leads me to resource number 2.  I’d highly recommend reading Yvonne Perry’s excellent book Whose Stuff Is This?: Finding Freedom from the Negative Thoughts, Feelings, and Energy of Those Around You.

Resource number 3 – homeopathy

If you are an empath and you haven’t tried homeopathy yet…I would highly recommend that you do so.  High energy situations and family happenings such as bereavements and divorce can leave us empaths flat on our backs and gasping, trying to process all that emotion.

The emotion can stay stuck in our energy fields if we are not careful, and needs to be released in some way.  If the energy is not leaving from other types of clearing practice or grounding, then homeopathic remedies may get you there.

I particularly like Dr Theresa Dale’s neuro-emotional remedies and would recommend you add any of these that resonate to your empath care kit!

I never really understood the notion that we have energy boundaries. I never really thought of myself as an empath until I read this article. I consider myself very spiritual, however I don’t consider myself as understanding and compassionate as I should be. Yet, when it comes down to it, I feel things too much, my own and others. Sometimes to the point that I have trouble functioning. I need to know my boundaries. Thank you for illustrating that.
