Developing your intuition – one of the big steps forward on the spiritual journey
I love this quote from the amazing Ralph Waldo Emerson about developing your intuition,
“Every known fact in natural science was divined by the presentiment of somebody, before it was actually verified.”
How does this relate to developing our intuition?
I love this quote particularly because I believe it truly honors our human condition as well as our human potential.
I believe that we all have our own natural intuition, divined by our presentiment (the Free Online Dictionary defines presentiment as “a sense that something is about to occur – a premonition”).
The human condition comes about when we receive these “presentiments” – how do we then go on and honor them in some way?
If it’s an ‘inner knowing’, how can we share this with others. How can we find the language to validate or verify what we ‘know’ to be true for us?
Intuition – some definitions and some thoughts about developing intuition as a process of growth and self-awareness
The Free Online Dictionary goes on to define intuition as “The act or faculty of knowing or sensing without the use of rational processes“.
Now the more I’m learning on my spiritual journey about the human body-mind and energy systems, the less I agree with this definition.
Brain research now proves that ‘rational’, ‘logical’ or left-brain processes cannot be activated without the emotional centers of the brain/body/mind being activated FIRST.
So in order to be rational, physically we must be emotional also. This puts a whole different spin on the phrase “Let’s just be logical, shall we?”
Developing your intuition as a growth and development tool
I’ve had the good fortune to work with some world-class personal development coaches learning tools that have helped me to develop my own inner guidance or intuition.
I believe that acknowledging that this process of developing your intuition can be defined as
- sensing the unseen
- hearing sounds in the silence
- feeling the space around us and ‘knowing’ something inside ourselves before it becomes a mental or cognitive process
- being inspired by something
- knowing something is going to happen before it does
- touching an object and knowing something about the owner
- being quite sure that somebody’s actions leave a bad taste in your mouth, even if you don’t know why.
Developing your intuition is a huge step on the spiritual journey!
Developing your intuition is a huge step on the path of personal development. Often, once a person focuses on growing themselves spiritually, their intuitive skills grow as a result.
And as Ralph Waldo Emerson says – learn to ‘divine presentiments’ Perhaps they are divine. Either way, we are honoring both sides of our brains and our body-minds in the process by developing our intuition.
