Autogenics — Odd Name, Easy Way to Meditate!
If you’re new to the world of Personal Energy or have heard people talk about Energy Work and wondered what it means, you might be asking yourself where to start.
I began developing my own spiritual and energetic awareness for one simple reason: I didn’t feel good.
At that time, life was stressful. I had a demanding job, a long commute, and a big mortgage. I knew I could make changes eventually, but in the meantime, I just felt tired and unfocused most of the time.
Then, after a powerful experience at a learning conference, I discovered Autogenics.
What Is Autogenics—and What Does It Have to Do with Meditation?
Autogenics is a form of body-based meditation that uses specific phrases or affirmations to connect deeply with the body.
Each phrase has been carefully tested and worded to trigger the most effective relaxation response, originally validated through hypnotherapy research in Germany.
At an education conference related to my work, I stumbled into a short 40-minute workshop led by a practitioner named Kai Kermani. I hadn’t planned to attend, but something about the phrase guided meditation intrigued me. I decided to give it a try.
Kai guided us through the session, and almost immediately, I had a vivid, immersive experience. My body felt light, my mind calm. Forty minutes passed in what felt like seconds. I thanked Kai afterward and rejoined my business partner for the rest of the day, still enveloped in that peaceful state.
For a while after, I felt profoundly relaxed and even blissful. I could sense people’s energy and felt connected to something timeless within myself, which made me unreasonably happy!
Surprising my business partner, I told her how much I loved her (she was surprised, but smiled and said it back). I even hugged a new colleague we’d just met, and he didn’t seem to mind either!
Learning Autogenics for Myself
After that experience, I decided to take an Autogenics course. My energetic awareness began to expand.
I found a local practitioner and enrolled in an eight-week program. The first lesson was incredibly simple:
Sit, relax, and breathe for a moment. Close your eyes and, in your mind, say:
“My right arm is warm and heavy.”
Repeat this three times.
Notice any sensations.
Then raise your arms, stretch, take a deep breath, and open your eyes.
I practiced this three times a day for a week. Each week, we added a new body part, the left arm, the legs, the abdomen, until the whole body was included.
It Sounds Deceptively Simple, Doesn’t it?
But here’s the thing: Autogenics really works. Even now, years later, when I say those same words:
“My right arm is warm and heavy.”
I instantly feel calm and centered as my body remembers this state that I’ve learned to anchor into.
Whenever I practiced, my business partner would notice and comment that my face looked softer, more relaxed. It’s such a simple practice, and yet so effective.
