Premonitions – a really great reader question unpacked
I’ve written a few posts about premonitions since I experience them regularly on the spiritual journey as do many of us, I’m sure.
This morning a reader commented on this post “How do I know if I’m having premonitions or psychic experiences – 3 keys to greater awareness”.
Readers may also find this post useful “Why do I have premonitions?”
I think I’ve had a few premonitions in my life as well. Although I’m not completely sure if they count as premonitions. Could you please help me make sense of it?
The first one I can remember started to happen when I was 18 years old. At night I would wake up at a certain time and my cellphones screen light will go on and then off again. It would repeat for about 5 min and then it would be gone. At first it only happened during the night but became more frequent and started happening during the day as well.
I thought there was something wrong with my phone, but no one could find anything wrong with it. I also have to mention the bad feeling I got each time it happened. It got worse over time and I just somehow knew it had something to do with death. This kept going for about two months and suddenly stopped when my Uncle died. The next time I had such a bad feeling was before I was in a car accident. About a minute before the accident I suddenly felt like I didn’t want to be in the car and had a strong urge to open the door and get out. Before a second car accident, I had this feeling again. This time I was about to drive. I was standing in my living room about to leave when I had the feeling that I shouldn’t get in behind the steering wheel.
The last one struck me the most. I started seeing the numbers 9 11 everywhere. (Just mentioning this was long after the 911 tragedy and had nothing to do with it) I saw it mostly in the time, but not one day would go by that I didn’t see those numbers at least 3 times. There were also knocking on my window at nights. The bad feeling I had again got worse and worse. It got so bad that each time I saw the numbers I would start to cry. I again knew that someone was going to die.
About 3 months after it began, my fathers uncle, which was like a grandfather to me, died. He died on 2013/9/11. I didn’t keep these feelings and “happenings” quiet. I told my family about them and it was my mom who first realized my 9 11 “premonition” and the date. I’ve started seeing the numbers again, but now I feel like its more about the 11. I’m struggling with this a bit. I have a bad feeling about these numbers again, but I don’t know if its actually a premonition or if its just me being paranoid and afraid that I will lose someone close to me again.
Is there any advice you can give me? Can you tell me more about what this is and how I can better “manage” it for the lack of a better word.
Thank you Mariaan for being brave and open enough to submit your comment, which I believe will be useful to many.
Why am I always getting premonitions about death?
Mariaan is having a powerful spiritual awakening.
It has been scientifically proven that the human brain remembers traumatic events even better than more ‘mundane’ events because emotionally arousing events trigger the amygdala, an almond-shaped part of the brain known to be involved in emotional learning and memory.
So it may be some comfort to learn that your brain is working perfectly normally when you remember more premonitions about death or scary experiences, as odd as it sounds and as distressing as it sometimes can be.
We are spirit radios – premonitions about death or accidents are just one frequency
The key here is first of all to understand that we are spirit radios. When we have a spiritual awakening, our intuition (that mysterious part of ourselves below our conscious awareness) will give us gifts. Initially, if those gifts are about major life events such as death and accidents, this can seem very scary.
We remember and focus on the feelings and the emotions surrounding these events and it magnifies our intuition into that part of the ‘field’. So we tune in to more and more of these events.
Mariaan is also receiving messages from her spirit guides. It may comfort her to know that she is not the only one who receives tapping or knocking on windows/doors as a sign. (I do too!).
How to manage our awakening intuition – especially when premonitions seem overwhelming?
Mariaan asks a great question here. I love power questions, especially when I can ask them in the context of an Akashic Records Reading!
First of all, it’s important to journal your intuitive experiences — and that means all of them, the good, the bad and the ugly…and the just plain incorrect. Our brains can fool us sometimes, but that doesn’t make the intuitive gift any less worthwhile pursuing. These gifts when embraced can help us and others too.
Journaling our premonitions will help us review the bigger picture – from seeing all of our premonitions in one place we can begin to understand our place as the ‘cog in the wheel’. We are not just here to experience the bad things, but the whole circle of life, in daily life and with our intuition too.
Secondly, find a way to work on developing your intuition. Which of the ‘clairs’ belong to you? Do you see things (clairvoyance) hear things (clairaudience) or do you have several other clairs or gifts working together? Intuitive development will help!
Thirdly, work on creating a relationship and connecting with your spirit guides. We all have them, and they are here to help. Ask them to communicate in other ways than the knocking and ask for help to expand your frequency so that you are more aware of the grace, wonder and blessings that can come from powerful intuitions of all kinds.
I had a powerful intuition that my mother would pass a year before she did (I took a photograph which showed white energy coming up out of her head and I ‘knew’ what that meant when I saw it). My mother’s passing ultimately became one of the most powerful spiritual awakenings of my life.[ctt title=”Embrace your gifts, as scary as that might feel.
