Indigo Children: Understanding Their Unique Traits

Personal Growth through the Akashic Records, Past Lives, Human Design and more with Sarah Lawrence

Explore the intriguing concept of Indigo Children and how synesthesia reveals personality types through colors.

What is an Indigo Child? Who Are Indigo Children?

It’s Not About Blue Auras — It’s About Synesthesia

The term “Indigo Children” was originally coined by Nancy Ann Tappe. She is a remarkable practitioner with a rare and scientifically recognized neurological condition called synesthesia.

Synesthesia occurs when the senses cross over; for example, someone might taste shapes or see sounds. In Nancy’s case, when she eats potatoes, she can “taste triangles.”

She’s not alone in this. Many people around the world experience synesthesia in different ways, and you might too! I’ve personally met several people who’ve described similar sensory crossovers once they felt safe enough to share.

Nancy Ann Tappe and the Birth of the Indigo Concept

Nancy’s unique gift allowed her to perceive organized consciousness as color. She could see a kind of “life color” around people. Not as an aura in the metaphysical sense, but as a neurological perception created by her synesthetic wiring.

She noticed that these colors corresponded with distinct personality patterns, and she developed a full interpretive system around them.

Over the years, Nancy taught workshops and eventually wrote her groundbreaking book, Understanding Your Life Through Color. This book explains how these color patterns can help people understand their life themes and soul purposes.

Famous Synesthetes and Their Gifts

Nancy wasn’t the only one with this extraordinary sensory cross-connection.

According to research and biographies, several artists and musicians are known or believed to be synesthetes. Some examples include Billy Joel, Tori Amos, and Stevie Wonder.

It’s even been suggested that Ludwig van Beethoven experienced synesthesia. Despite going deaf later in life, he continued composing music. He reportedly “saw” notes and harmonies as colors and shapes in his mind.

Nancy Tappe Begins to See a New Color: Indigo

As Nancy worked with more people, she began noticing something unusual. She saw a new color appearing around many children and young adults that she had never seen before: Indigo.

This wasn’t symbolic or psychic “blue light.” It was a neurological perception of a new energetic pattern. One that seemed to correspond with a new generation of consciousness.

Nancy began describing these children as “Indigo Children”, being highly perceptive, strong-willed, and intuitive. They often seemed to be resistant to outdated systems or authority structures.

She believed these children were part of an evolutionary wave. That they were Souls designed to help shift humanity toward greater awareness, compassion, and integrity.

Indigo Children Are the “New Kids on the Block” — In an Evolutionary Sense

From this perspective, Indigo Children aren’t about aura colors or labels; they represent a new level of human consciousness.

These are children (and now adults) who naturally perceive the world in multidimensional ways. They can blend intuition, intellect, and emotion with striking clarity.

Nancy’s synesthetic perception simply helped her see this energetic pattern first-hand. It wasn’t mystical so much as neurological, but deeply meaningful nonetheless.

The Indigo Children Books

After attending Nancy Tappe’s workshops, Lee Carroll (known for his Kryon channeling work) began exploring the Indigo phenomenon more deeply.

He went on to write two influential books about Indigo Children:

  1. The Indigo Children: The New Kids Have Arrived
  2. The Indigo Children: Ten Years Later

Both Indigo Children books are insightful resources for parents raising these bright, sensitive, and often strong-minded children. They are also helpful for adults who are beginning to recognize their own “Indigo” nature.

Raising (or Being) an Indigo Child

Raising Indigo Children can be both beautiful and challenging. These children are often system-busters; they know what they want, resist conformity, and see through outdated social rules.

They’re here to help evolve collective consciousness, but they also need understanding, respect, and space to be who they are. Trying to force them into molds that don’t fit just won’t work.

If you’re parenting an Indigo Child (or are one), you’ll know that strong will and high sensitivity are part of the same gift. This gift is the ability to see and feel truth deeply, even when the world isn’t quite ready for it.

    Hello my friend,

Couldn’t remember if I had told you that I have synesthesia and so does my sister (although hers differs from mine). I can see certain feelings. The most intense and spectacular is during birth. More subtly – cuddles, breastfeeding, fear, guilt, hunger, stress.

May I suggest you read the book – Born on a Blue Day.
