High Fructose Corn Syrup – not such a sweet alternative
Have you seen the ads reassuring us that High Fructose Corn Syrup is a good thing?
I had noticed these ads being shown later last year and early this year, saying that High Fructose Corn Syrup or HCFS is ‘just like sugar’ and ‘one less thing to worry about’. And I thought to myself…hmnnnn….
This might make you think differently about High Fructose Corn Syrup
Came across a great link on Yahoo.com that made me think differently. Here’s the link if you want to read the detail, in essence here are the key points…
- High Fructose Corn Syrup is manufactured from corn kernels spun at high velocity and combined with three other enzymes – so it’s not a naturally occurring substance, like fructose in fruit, for example
- High Fructose Corn Syrup slows down the secretion of leptin in the body, which is produced naturally by our bodies to let us know we are full and to stop eating. That’s why when you eat some popular forms of chips, you ‘pop’ and you really can’t stop!
- There may be mercury in High Fructose Corn Syrup. The FDA performed a study where they discovered 9 out of 20 samples of commercially available High Fructose Corn Syrup contained mercury. Hmnnnn.
- Supporting products containing High Fructose Corn Syrup is definitely not helping the planet or helping the green movement. Land used solely for growing growing one product (monoculture) means that pesticides must be used in large quantities. And then there’s genetically modified corn…
Corn Refiners Association petitions the FDA for use of ‘Corn Sugar’ as an alternative name for High Fructose Corn Syrup Sept 2010
In September 2010, the Corn Refiners Association issued a press release to help clear up any ‘confusion’ about High Fructose Corn Syrup, essentially doing their best to change the name and remove the product from any bad rap that might have got attached to it.
“Consumers need to know what is in their foods and where their foods come from and we want to be clear with them,” said CRA president Audrae Erickson. “The term ‘corn sugar’ succinctly and accurately describes what this natural ingredient is and where it comes from – corn.”
As you can see from the previous main points, HFCS, Corn Sugar, High Fructose Corn Syrup or whatever you may want to call it if you want to sell it to people, may be a naturally occurring ingredient, but it is most definitely not so once it has gone through the manufacturing process.

I think the moral of this tale is – as mothers have said for years, if it’s not natural and you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it. One less thing to worry about.
