Why We Fear Change: Releasing Fears When Clearing Energy

Why we fear change - we can fear events that relate to survival, that's only natural.

Sometimes we can fear change that hasn't even happened yet. Here are some steps to help you shift your mindset and energy around the fear of change.

As the saying goes, “Change is here to stay”, yet we fear change. We may struggle to deal with it; this article addresses some first steps.

Why We Fear Change and How Can It Feel So Scary?

It helps us to understand why we fear change. All humans experience fear because it’s part of our survival instincts. Sometimes, though, we can end up stuck in our fears, even when they are unhelpful. They no longer serve us and hinder the changes that would be healthy for us to make.

So, our brain activates the fear response when we step into a fear-filled environment. In prehistoric times, fears were something that genuinely threatened our survival. Something like an earthquake – or hunting a powerful animal for dinner.

What happens when we experience fear?

Hormonal changes are created by the amygdala in our brains, sending a distress signal to our hypothalamus. In the prehistoric past, stress on the mind and body would ultimately be dissipated by running away or completing the hunt.

In modern times, however, our brains still generate this response, even if the challenge is purely mental. We don’t always get the opportunity to release the fear through physical action.

Back in the day, when I taught touch-typing and course design, we’d use the example of biting into a lemon. People were fearful of learning to type when they came to our classes. This was because they feared failing in their jobs, as they had never had to learn to type or use a computer before.

The Lemon Exercise

If we can imagine the smell, taste, and texture of a lemon, our mouth might water. This shows us that our brains and nervous systems don’t know the difference between an imaginary lemon and a real one.

It’s the same with imagined fears; then the energies of those unprocessed fears may build up in our bodies without release. Just like when we imagine smelling a lemon, our nervous system doesn’t know the difference between an external fear and a mind-based fear.

The Familiar Isn’t Always Safe, It’s Just Familiar

The second part of this equation relates to why we fear change: our bodies are designed to enjoy the familiar first. This is simply because it feels nicer.

This is one reason why we might repeatedly order the same favorite thing from a menu, enjoy watching a movie again, or relish the prospect of a walk down a lane we have strolled along many times.

The body knows what’s coming, and it likes it. Although if we applied the ‘fear’ filter to those familiar and safe activities, we might never do them! We could get food poisoning, the movie could scare us, or a car could be driving very fast up that country lane.

So, when you find yourself ruminating in fear (as we all do, sometimes), the first step forward could be a reframe. This is simply a process that offers your mind a ‘this’ instead of what it is ruminating on, the ‘that’.

Simply ask yourself: Is there something familiar and comfortable I can connect to, related to the activity, choice, or action that the fear is causing?

While you are resting in that more comfortable idea, it’s also worth asking…

Why We Fear Change: What Am I Really Afraid of Losing?

A few years ago, I studied with a very adept card reader. She taught us to pull cards related to the question at hand. We would then pull a card to ask: “What is really going on?

As Carl Jung has famously identified: –

That which we do not bring to consciousness appears in our lives as fate.

Carl Jung.

There can be many subconscious reasons that cause us to stick with what we know. We’d prefer to avoid moving out of our comfort zone. Unfortunately, this may cause us to stay in a situation or circumstance that isn’t going to serve us in the long run.

Usually, the subconscious fears are about fear of some kind of ‘death ‘ due to survival fears. Sometimes the fear relates to an illusion that we are better served by staying put. We can’t truly know if we are better served by a new experience unless we try it. Even so, the human ego and our bodies are understandably nervous about risks.

After all, we have centuries of experiences embedded energetically in our DNA. These energetics tell us that risking new approaches, ideas, or situations can get us negatively impacted in some way. That’s why Copernicus didn’t tell anyone his scientific theories until he was on his deathbed, for example. He knew the idea would be unpopular, and he could have been tortured and killed for his theories.

When Your Energy is Holding On

Even when you want to move forward, ‘something’ is holding you back. When this happens, the following factors from your Akashic Records may be holding you in place: –

Trying to touch the ‘untouchable’ can be one of the biggest challenges on the spiritual journey. This is because we are trying to connect to a new and as-yet unknown energy. This is against our body and ego’s wishes and preferences.

One way to get around this issue is to distract the body and ego with an activity while contemplating change. That’s why Tarot and Oracle Card decks can be so helpful in this scenario. They are a kind of icebreaker that helps us to unlock the energy involved.

This works because the ego gets involved with looking at the information on the cards. Then, the subconscious mind can begin to recognize a pattern.

Why Clearing Energy Can Feel Uncomfortable

If you haven’t done energy clearing work yet, this is one reason why it can feel uncomfortable to begin with. The clearing process I have clients work with is essentially a chakra-clearing process, but it’s also multi-dimensional.

So that means that more than one aspect of your energy is being cleansed. It’s like going for the super wash at the car wash place. Our bodies and egos will definitely know the difference. Initially, it could be difficult to assimilate, since change is about to occur. Remember, we all go through changes in life on a regular basis. Feeling that discomfort first is one reason why we fear change.

Think of being in a darkened room for a while and then suddenly stepping out into the sunlight. We have to take a few moments to adjust, and initially the sunlight can seem almost painful. But then, we remember the warmth and get on with our day.

Energy clearing can feel like that. It can also make us feel tired, dehydrated, and perhaps a little uncertain. Change is here to stay!

It’s Impossible to Know Everything That’s Coming

The fact is, to live the dance of life more fully, we can’t always know what’s coming. Getting too stuck in our comfort zones might be good for a while. However, being stuck will hold us back in the long run.

At some point, we have to take a chance. If something doesn’t work out, we can always backtrack and try another way. As a collective, many of us have been programmed through present and past-life experiences to simply obey orders.

This kind of ancient programming is in our genes through our family line as genetic karma. It’s also possibly in our subconscious through past-life experiences. We need to learn to embrace a little discomfort to get where we are going. Otherwise, we are limiting our future potential.

Through the Akashic Records, we can learn to assess our personal manifestation measurements. This is our potential for change. Knowing that is a great first step on the path to conscious change and growth.

Why We Fear Change, and Learning to Release the Fear

As we work on changing ourselves, it’s important to understand that we live in a society where limitations are everywhere.

When we are born, we are fresh from the field of consciousness, and still strongly connected to our Soul-level selves. Limitations are put in place by our parents, family, and carers as we grow. This is so that we can survive and function in human society.

Whether these limitations are all helpful and appropriate for who we are at Soul-level can be questionable. Learning which limitations and fears to release is a big part of the spiritual journey.

The true meaning of ascension isn’t necessarily ‘rising’. It is just as helpful to consider ascension as a process of reconnection. Reconnecting with who we were before we incarnated.

By now, you may have heard of the phrase “FEAR – False Evidence That Appears Real“. This can certainly be true. False evidence can be blocks such as negative thought forms, hidden emotions, illusions, and old patterns of behavior.

I prefer to call FEAR “False ENERGY that appears real“.

Often, the real reasons why we fear change come down to old habits. We may have knee-jerk responses and old karmic patterns that are calling out for release. Seeing fears from this perspective is definitely something to contemplate on the spiritual path.

They can become the old clothes we need to let go of, rather than a reason why we fear change.

  • I started this blog in 2010 to remember my British mum Margaret, who was highly intuitive, but hid it almost forever - until she told me later in her life. She also told me not to hide what I know, and to write about it! So, here it is.

I'm also a mom, writer, budding artist, and lover of fantasy novels - and third in a female line of intuitives. Over time, this blog has grown to reflect my spiritual journey, and the readings, coachings, teachings and sessions that I offer.

In my previous careers, I have worked in UK Broadcast Media (BBC, Sky, Channel 4, ITV). I trained people on computers in a UK Water Authority, then ran a freelance training business, followed by a partner business where we incorporated NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and Accelerated learning into technical business trainings.

During this time I co-created a successful long-running course incorporating Accelerated Learning techniques (1998-2021) and taught business trainers course design techniques, too.

I hope you enjoy my writing, and maybe you'll consider booking a reading or requesting a chart if you are intrigued by what is offered here.

Lots of light, and thanks for visiting!
