Why Can’t We Remember Past Lives?
Not everyone has spontaneous past-life recall and can remember past lives—but some children do, especially in early childhood.
These memories often surface before age eight or nine, a time when a child’s inner world is still fluid, porous, and imaginative.
Parents often dismiss these early statements as make-believe or fantasy. And while imagination certainly plays a role, some stories invite a second look.
One powerful example is the story of a young boy named Christian, shared by his mother, Cathy Byrd. I reviewed their book on my blog a while ago, and it left an impression.
Christian, the young child in the book, wasn’t just recalling any past life. He remembered being Lou Gehrig—yes, the baseball legend whose name is now associated with ALS. Even if you’re not a sports fan, you’ve likely heard of Lou Gehrig through the ALS ice bucket challenge that swept the internet years ago.
Christian’s memories became a doorway into learning about Lou Gehrig’s life from an unexpected angle: through a child who simply knew too much.

Why Does Remembering Past Lives Happen More Easily in Childhood?
Before age nine, the myelin sheath—the protective insulation around nerve fibers—is still forming.
Neuroscience describes this clearly (see “myelinogenesis” for the specifics). Without full myelination, children process ideas, imagination, and subtle impressions differently than adults.
This is why young children can inhabit entire worlds through a blanket fort or believe wholeheartedly in Santa Claus, the tooth fairy, or the “monster under the bed.” Their nervous system makes these experiences feel completely real.
This same openness may also allow deeper sensitivity to intuitive or energetic perceptions—including the possibility that they’ll remember past lives.
Children may speak casually about “their other family,” describe places they’ve never visited, or mention deceased relatives they’ve never met. As they grow and their nervous system matures, this permeability fades. Attention shifts toward learning how to be a person in this life—how to become a teen, a young adult, a functioning human with responsibilities and expectations.
Many children naturally leave their early sensitivities behind. Even Christian did. After years of sharing memories of Lou Gehrig, he eventually told his mother, very simply, that he was now “ready to be Christian.”
That transition is common.
Some People Retain Sensitivity Into Adulthood
A portion of us carry that early sensitivity forward, though not always comfortably. Psychic or intuitive gifts often lose support as we move through adolescence. Without context, guidance, or community, many of us learn to block, suppress, or numb these abilities.
In my own life, I dulled my sensitivity first with sugar and later with alcohol. It doesn’t take much—one drink, or even a bar of chocolate, can temporarily dim subtle awareness.

Some People Grow Up But Still Retain Psychic Sensitivity
Those of us with psychic gifts may still have access to extrasensory energetic information.
Often, we lack encouragement to either express our gifts or maintain them, so we may compartmentalize our gifts or block them altogether.
I know I blocked my gifts as I became a teen. I had no frame of reference for managing the experiences I had and no support from my parents or peers to do so.
Initially, I blocked my sensitivity with sugar, and later in life with alcohol. (You don’t need to drink much to block the psychic awareness; one drink can stop sensitivity for a while).
One small bar of chocolate will certainly dull spiritual connection for a time, too.
How to Remember Past Lives
Another question I received on Quora was: How do I remember my past lives?
Lee Carroll, who channels Kryon, once mentioned that future generations may be born with far more access to their Akashic Records. Whether taken literally or symbolically, it raises a profound possibility: what would it mean to remember not just fragments, but all of our past lives?
Tibetan monks already use this idea in choosing the next Dalai Lama. The child is tested for specific memories that align with the previous incarnation.
But full recall is more than the romantic parts of spiritual memory. Remembering past lives would mean becoming aware of:
- every person you’ve harmed or been harmed by
- all joys and traumas
- each illness and every loss
- all the talents you have mastered
- every lifetime you lived—in male and female bodies, again and again
- and, for those who identify as Wanderers or Starseeds, even memories from lifetimes beyond Earth
After years of reading Akashic Records (since 2010), I can say this: most people—including myself—are not fully prepared for the weight of all those memories at once.
It can be challenging enough to explore one past life, let alone dozens, hundreds, or all of them.

Why We Don’t Remember—Yet
So why can’t we remember past lives now?
Perhaps because we’re not meant to carry the entire archive at once.
When we are developmentally, emotionally, and spiritually ready, deeper remembering may become more natural. Future generations may come in with expanded access, clearer sensitivity, and a different kind of nervous-system coherence that allows remembering past lives without overwhelm.
Until then, recall tends to come in waves: early childhood glimpses, intuitive flashes, or quiet recognition when the time is right.
Remembering past lives is less about forcing memory and more about evolving into greater awareness.
