Choosing a crystal – some first steps

If you are anything like me, then you may be drawn to crystal work.  Perhaps you are ready to being the process of choosing a crystal.

Crystals can make their way into our spiritual practice in any number of ways.

In my experience, my spiritual awakening was linked to the use of crystals to sense energy and expand my vibration.

My first crystal class

Going to a crystal class is a great way to learn more about crystals if you are drawn to them.

The first class I went to was at an alternative fair in Crawley, East Sussex, United Kingdom.  I really enjoyed listening to somebody who felt as passionate about crystals as I was.

Next, I managed to find a class in Tunbridge Wells, where a husband and wife team had owned a crystal shop there for 30 years.

The owner taught me a lot.  One of the simplest teachings was to choose a quartz crystal to begin with and just work with one crystal for several months.

In his opinion, a quartz crystal is really all anyone needs to start informing themselves of the energies a crystal contains.

I also remember him darkening the room and demonstrating triboluminescence, which is the flash of light produced when two crystals are hit together quickly.

Triboluminescence sometimes is called “cold light” because no heat is produced.

Material scientists believe the light results from a  combination of electrical charges that become separated when crystals are fractured. When the charges get back together, the air is ionized, producing a flash of light.  (Source thoughtco.com).

The call to a crystal

On the spiritual path, often we find ourselves receiving messages about a specific crystal we are ready to work with.

How does this call from a crystal come about?  Here are some ways which may be familiar to you, or after reading this article may happen for you!

  • Dreaming about a crystal
  • Walking past a crystal store you have never noticed before
  • 3 separate people or circumstances bring up the subject of crystals
  • You just can’t help yourself and go looking!

Using Crystals

Dr. Norm Shealy, MD, Ph.D., says in his  publication Medical Intuition, Awakening to Wholeness

‘Crystalline structures are piezoelectric. Piezoelectric means that when you put physical pressure on a substance, it responds with an electrical current. Quartz crystal is one of the premier piezoelectric crystals but our skeletons, muscles, tendons, and even our intestines are highly piezoelectric.’

OK so crystals are piezoelectric – why would using crystals be beneficial to a person?

Quartz and other crystals’ have unique structural properties.

Many people believe that when a current or energy is run through a crystal it resonates at a certain frequency.  Specific frequencies can be helpful to the body.  Some crystals are also thought to be helpful in relation to a particular emotional or even a physical condition.

Also, it’s believed that crystals can retain energies or ‘programs’ to help a person with their healing.

So for example, rose quartz is often reputed to help with the heart chakra or heart center of the body.  The atomic structure and resonating quality of rose quartz is close to that of the heart area of the body.

Another example is clear quartz, which resonates more closely with the frequencies of the crown chakra.

Using crystals with energy work and spiritual practice

I use crystals to hold energy in a room and help to pick myself up.  Crystals can also be very helpful to assist clients who need an energy shift during an energy session.

I also use different crystals for the individual chakras, or energy centers and practice chakra balancing with crystals (see photo above).

It can be helpful to hold a crystal when meditating or seeking inspiration for a project, or for problem-solving.  When you visit a crystal store, if you can, ask the owner to allow you to hold a crystal.  This will help you decide which crystal is best to begin with.

I gave my mum a crystal a few years ago (ametrine/aka ametrine, said to help with headaches). She slept with the crystal by her bed, kept it with her when she was sick, and said that it did help her.

You may already be using crystals in your kitchen!

I believe this is why there is a current craze for granite countertops in kitchens! They are beautiful of course but emit a measurable piezoelectric field that relaxes and restores us.

If you have ever had the good fortune to travel to Yosemite National Park, you will enjoy the relaxing vibe. The whole place is on a substructure of granite, give sight-seers a beautiful and peaceful sensation.

I have traveled to Stone Mountain, near Atlanta, GA.  There you can take a sky ride up to the top of the ‘world’s largest piece of exposed granite.

Many visitors are attracted to the location, because of the quiet peace and beauty there…maybe it’s the piezoelectrics too!

Choosing a crystal of your own

To starting using crystals, take some time to visit a local crystal store.  Notice what draws you to a crystal.  Is it the appearance, the sensation the crystal gives you, or some other kind of awareness?

eBay is a good place to look, and these days even Amazon has crystal stores selling their wares.

Once you start, be prepared to end up with a collection.  Crystals are so beautiful and have so many uses – sometimes it’s hard to stop!
